Logan Airport: A Hurricane Hangover

Logan International Airport is Boston’s main gateway to the world. Located mostly in East Boston with a bit of Winthrop thrown in, it’s a major player in the New England travel scene.

With its six runways and four terminals, Logan handles millions of passengers each year. It’s a hub for several airlines and offers flights to countless domestic and international destinations.

It seems like Hurricane Debby’s impact on travel is still being felt, especially at Logan Airport. Even though the storm has weakened, its lingering effects are causing major headaches for passengers.

Hurricane season has thrown a wrench into travel plans, and Logan Airport is feeling the brunt of it. With dozens of flights canceled and delayed over the weekend, and the situation not improving much on Monday, it’s clear that the airport is struggling to catch up. To make matters worse, hotels in the area were completely booked up, leaving many travelers stranded and without a place to stay.

If you’re planning a trip through Boston anytime soon, be prepared for potential disruptions. 

Looks like Massport was trying to give everyone a heads up about the potential travel chaos Hurricane Debby could cause. They posted a warning on X (formerly Twitter) both Sunday and Monday, saying that flights to and from the southeastern US might get messed up for a few days.

So, if you were planning a trip down south, it’s a good idea to check with your airline before you head to the airport.

Delta Flight Diverted After Lightning Strike

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Rome had to make an unexpected U-turn back to Logan Airport on Sunday evening due to a lightning strike. Can you imagine being in the middle of a flight and suddenly getting zapped by lightning?   

The Airbus A330 was about an hour into its journey when the crew decided it was best to head back to Boston. Luckily, everyone on board is safe, but it must have been quite a shock for the passengers.

Delta hasn’t shared many details yet, but they’re working on getting everyone to Rome as soon as possible.

JetBlue to the Rescue for Stranded Travelers!

Here’s some good news for folks caught in the Logan Airport mess! JetBlue, the airport’s biggest carrier, is stepping up to help.

If your flight was scheduled for August 4th between Boston and several other cities (check their website for details), and it got canceled thanks to Hurricane Debby, JetBlue is waiving those pesky change fees and fare differences!

Even better, you can rebook your flight online through their “Manage Trips” section on jetblue.com before your original flight was supposed to take off. This applies to flights happening any time between now and August 7th.

So, if you were stuck at Logan or worried about your upcoming trip, JetBlue might just be your hero!

United Airlines is also offering some relief for travelers affected by Hurricane Debby.

If you bought a United flight before August 3rd and were scheduled to fly between August 3rd and 5th, you’re in luck.The airline is waiving change fees and fare differences!

But there are a few catches:

• Your new flight needs to take off between August 2nd and 10th.
• You can’t change your travel destination or seat class.

So, if you need to reschedule your United flight due to the hurricane, this might be helpful.

American Airlines is also offering some flexibility for travelers affected by Hurricane Debby.

If you bought an American Airlines ticket before August 3rd and were scheduled to fly between August 4th and 5th, you can change your flight without paying a change fee. But there are a few conditions:

• You need to travel between August 4th and 8th.
• You can’t change your original departure or arrival city.
• You have to make the changes by August 5th.

So, if you need to adjust your travel plans due to the hurricane, American Airlines is giving you a bit of wiggle room.
