HIGHLAND PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) – A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck a heavily populated section of Los Angeles County on Monday, shaking buildings and leaving residents rattled throughout the region.

After the earthquake, things got pretty crazy in Pasadena. A person got stuck in an elevator according to NBC 4 Los Angeles,  and a huge pipe burst right in front of City Hall! Water was pouring everywhere, so they had to send everyone home for a bit. Luckily, no one was hurt, and people were able to go back to work about an hour later.

The “notable” quake had an initial reported intensity of 4.7 but has since been revised down to 4.4, the agency said.

Last week, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake near Bakersfield rumbled through Southern California, and on July 29, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake in Barstow hit Southern California. Both earthquakes were felt in the Los Angeles region.

California: Land of Shaky Ground

In the LA, some people are saying its normal for LA to have such earthquakes, and its not a big deal.

California is famous for sunshine and beaches. Well, it’s also known for being a bit…shaky. Earthquakes are like the state’s not-so-secret superpower. They happen all the time, big and small. Sometimes it’s just a little rumble that makes you wonder if a truck is passing by. Other times, it’s a full-on shake-up that can be pretty scary.

There have been some really big ones over the years. One of the most famous is the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. It was like a monster shake that flattened a whole city! Since then, there have been lots of others, some big, some small, but they’ve all been part of California’s wild story.
